Visitor Safety Tips

On the road
The Great Alpine Road is fully sealed and well-maintained with year round access. However, one should take extra care when driving in the Alpine Mountains, as roads can be narrow and winding.

During winter, the road to Mt Buffalo, Falls Creek and Mt Hotham is safe and cleared of snow constantly. While snow clearing equipment is used in the mountain areas in winter, you should be prepared for potential fog, ice, snow and strong winds during these months. When travelling on snow and ice, travel slowly, use lower gears, especially on steep down grade, brake slowly and early. Don't brake around corners.

It is regulation that snow chains, chains must be carried during the winter season. Modern easy to fit snowchain rental is readily available in the valley from ski hire shops and service stations throughout the Alpine High Country.

Motorists should also take extra care after days of rains and around sunrise and sunset when animals are more prevalent on the roads.

Ensure you are well rested before undertaking a long trip and take a break every two hours. Share the driving whenever possible.

Check Road Conditions
Check fuel, oil, tyres and antifreeze before you go to any of the ski resorts as there are limited services available. Alpine diesel is recommended for driving in the High Country and is available throughout the Alpine High Country.

Fuel
There is fuel available at petrol stations in Myrtleford, Porepunkah and Bright.

In the water
Be very careful when swimming in isolated locations in rivers, creeks and waterholes, especially if you have children with you.

Do not dive off rocks into natural pools that may be too shallow or you may sustain permanent spinal injuries. Don’t swim after dark, or when under the influence of alcohol.

Enjoying nature
If embarking on a bushwalk, always tell someone where you are going and be prepared for unexpected weather. Seek information on conditions from the ranger station or visitor information centre prior to departure. Also check the degree of difficulty of your walk.

Never walk alone, and always take sufficient food and water for the duration of the walk. Although the mountain streams are crystal clear, they are often unsuitable for drinking. When walking, carry a mobile phone if you’re within range of a network, but remember that coverage within the Alpine National Park and Mt Buffalo National Park is patchy and low temperatures can affect batteries.

Fires
When a total fire ban is declared, no fires of any kind are allowed in the open. This ban covers gas and fuel cookers, although barbeques provided in the park can be used. If you see a fire, note its position and phone 000.

Weather Conditions
If you’re heading the high areas, always pack warm and waterproof clothes. Even in cold weather, it’s easy to get sunburn. In alpine areas there are fewer trees, so shade is scare, ultraviolet radiation increases with altitude. For up to the minute weather reports online; www.weather.com.au.
